Project Description
The King of Prussia (KOP) Technical Corporation Site is located in Winslow Township, New Jersey, about 30 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The site is situated on approximately ten acres within the Pinelands National Reserve, and adjacent to the State of New Jersey’s Winslow Wildlife Refuge. The KOP Technical Corporation purchased the site in 1970 to operate an industrial metals waste recycling center. The operation was not successful, and in 1985 the site was placed on the National Priorities List. In 1990 a Record of Decision (ROD) was issued for the site, and soil washing was specified as the cleanup technology to be used for remediating the soils. ART (formerly Alternative Remedial Technologies Inc.) performed a treatability studies in 1991 to determine the applicability of soil washing to the site. The results of treatability studies indicated that soil washing was an effective remedy for the site and the decision was made to implement soil washing at this site.

Plant Assembly |
Soil Feeding |
A 25-tons-per-hour soil washing plant was designed and manufactured. After erection of the plant on-site, a pilot run was conducted on 1,000 tons of contaminated soils excavated from the site. The pilot run was successful, with cleanup levels well below the ROD-specified standards. As a result, USEPA granted prompt approval to proceed with full-scale remediation.

“I am very pleased with the results of the ART soil washing activities. Their system, and the way it was engineered, has proven to be an effective remediation technology for the heavy-metals contamination at the KOP site.” Frank J. Opet, Chairman, PRP Group. |
The project was performed with full EPA oversight and NJDEP participation.
The process and products were controlled by on-site X-ray fluorescence using previously prepared site matrix-matched standards and confirmed by off-site CLP analysis. Correlation between the approaches was excellent. The project treated 19,200 tons of soil with a volume reduction of greater than 90% on a dry solids basis. The overall analytical results were as follows:
